Quiet Newfs…hahaha, That’s a Good One
Friday, June 5th, 2009It seems a Newfoundland breeder in an attempt to make the breed look better to the casual internet cruiser and posted this on their website:
“One of the not-so-obvious advantages of owning a dry-mouth Newf is reduced smell and therefore, grooming costs (likely your largest expense with these dogs).”
“Our experience has shown that a typical, healthy Newfoundland dog, costs, on average, $100/month, or $1200/year in food, training, grooming and veteranarian bills. Being a large, long-haired canine, regular grooming is essential to the health and beauty of your pet. We live in a temperate climate with four distinct seasons and find that the dog will require its greatest grooming needs in the spring and autumn when things are wetter.”
“Newfoundland dogs tend to be quiet dogs that don’t have a reputation for chewing or digging”
Let me tell you and show you about that!
First, let me address the cost statement. If we take the Newfs to the groomer, who gives us a very good deal, it will cost us $140 to groom both of them. This is about half of what most groomers charge!
Second, Dry mouth. Let me tell you, if I could figure out a way to harness the drool that comes out of Fargo’s mouth and fuel my car, I would never have to buy gas again! Sadie on the other hand very rarely drools but she still does on occasion. We consider ourselves very fortunate that so far she hasn’t become a drooler but I suspect that as she continues to grow, that will not be the case.
Third, digging. While they may not naturally be diggers, it can be taught and our Pyr, Ursa, has done a fine job of that! Just see our past posts on our backyard.
And last but not least, quiet. All I can say is, hahahahahahaha! Here, I’ll let you be the judge…
Big Bad Monster
Friday, May 29th, 2009Yesterday I picked up a used window A/C unit to put in the dog’s room so that we didn’t have to cool the whole house this summer in an attempt to keep their little 10×10 room cool.
The dogs were bugging the crap out of me while I put it in. It went in without too much trouble, the dogs were sniffing it out seeing what this thing was all about when all of a sudden this big white thing turned into a big white monster! It started blowing air at us and making a rumbling sound. It was quite clearly a Big White Boogie Monster!
I actually turned it on with the remote that came with it. Oh my gosh, you thought the world ws coming to an end and this thing was getting ready to eat the three of them alive!
They all started barking at it and running for the back door. When I let them out, they all went running off the porch and came to a screeching halt as they rounded the corner. There was that damned monster trying to sneak out the window and get us in the yard! Will this thing never leave us alone!
It took an hour for them to quit barking at it! I wish I had had my camera with me.
Long Night Last Night
Wednesday, May 27th, 2009Sometimes you have to wonder, “What the hell?”
Last night there was a pretty big thunderstorm that came through our little spot in Texas. It wasn’t any different than any other thunderstorm that we’ve had come through, but tonight at about 1:30am, Ursa decided she didn’t like thunderstorms.
Since we have had her, I can’t even count how many storms we’ve had. She has slept through every single one that has hit us. It didn’t matter if it was daytime or nighttime, she totally ignored them. Tonight’s storm though, she decided these things are scary and started whinning and just wouldn’t stop.
I got up at about 1:30am, Ruthanna got up about 2:15am, we both were up about 2:30am but nothing seemed to calm Ursa. Finally about 3:30am, Ruthanna laid down on the couch and Ursa immediately jumped up on the couch with her, laid down and quit whining.
Ruthanna then deided it would be best for the two of them to sleep on the dog couch, as they have done before,

and not on the good couch. Ruthanna didn’t want to give Ursa the idea that now it was ok to get on the good couch and once everyone was settled in, all was ok for about an hour. Then Ursa decided the coast was all clear and got down.
Of course jealous Sadie had to then get up and rest with Mom since Ursa got to do that. Luckily for Ruthanna, that only lasted about 10 minutes before Sadie decided that that really wasn’t that much fun and got on down and Ruthanna could get back to sleep.
Hopefully tonight there won’t be any more thunderstorms and we can all get a good nights rest!
